Vocabulary of Vision

Vocabulary of Vision marked the inaugural exhibition at Black Cube Gallery’s new space in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, from February 27 to March 23, 2025. Curated by Sanya Malik, the exhibition brought together 25 leading Indian artists spanning modern masters and contemporary voices, exploring art as a distinctive form of language where lines, colours, shapes, and forms become each artist’s unique lexicon of expression.

Inspired by Roland Barthes’ concepts of visual communication, the exhibition examined how artists craft individual visual vocabularies through diverse approaches to abstraction, figuration, texture, and colour. Yashika Sugandh participated alongside established and emerging artists, contributing to a dynamic dialogue that challenged conventional hierarchies and created space for different artistic languages to interact.

The exhibition presented a compelling assembly of works that invited viewers to consider perception itself: how we see, interpret, and understand the visual world around us. Through varied mediums and approaches, Vocabulary of Vision celebrated the depth and diversity of contemporary Indian artistic expression, positioning tradition and experimentation in meaningful conversation. This debut presentation established Black Cube Gallery as a vital platform for critical discourse and artistic exchange, honouring both historically recognized voices and those charting new creative territories.
